What a interesting trip it’s been.

In 1979 or 1980, while a typically green freshman at university, I found myself as a devotée of the pipe. It started as just some strange, romantic notion. I loved the way pipe tobaccos smelled, and the whole idea of the pipe had an anacronistic and academic aire to it that appealed to me. A block away from the Berkeley campus was a renown tobacconist’s shop called Drucquer & Sons. I soon became a one of the fixtures there.

Who knew that almost 20 years later, after spending far too much time slinging code, participating in failed high-tech startups, traveling a bit, doing a little commercial and art photography, and a few other things, with my pipes always there as stalwart companions, I’d end up creating my own brand of tobaccos? That’s exactly what happened, and I’ve never enjoyed anything so much. The range of blends has grown a bit since I got started in 1998, and GLPease tobaccos have gone from being a local specialty product to one that is known on almost every continent – though, still a specialty product. A tin a week; that’s all we ask. (Hope the roasted nut sellers don’t sue me for that…)

In addition to pipes and tobaccos, I love a nice cigar, good wines and spirits, great food (both cooking and eating), photography, mountain biking, fencing (as in sword-like things – not redwood, chain-link, barbed wire, &c), music, reading, writing, sport cars… This BLOG will, over time, explore some of these passions, and others. I don’t know about you, but I think it’ll be a fun ride.

I’ll stop now, before this sounds more like an entry in one of those on-line dating sites than it already does. Oh, by the way, I’m an Aries. Love your nails…
